Know more about Abu Simbel which was rediscovered in 1813 by Swiss explorer John Lewis Burckhardt who was led to the site by a boy named Abu Simbel and the site was then named after him. The temples had long been forgotten and the sands of the desert covered it all except the tops of the heads of the huge statues in front of their entrances. Since 1909 when the sand was finally cleared away, these twin temples have become the most famous site in Egypt’s south. The Great Temple stands 98 feet (30 metres) high and 115 feet (35 metres) long with four seated colossi flanking the entrance, two to each side, depicting Ramesses II on his throne; each one 65 feet (20 metres) tall. Beneath these giant figures are smaller statues depicting Ramesses' conquered enemies, the Nubians, Libyans, and Hittites. Further statues represent his family members and various protecting gods and symbols of power. Passing between the colossi, through the central entrance, the interior of the temple is decorated with engravings showing Ramesses and Nefertari paying homage to the gods.

Steigenberger Omar El Khayam Lake Nasser Cruise

Set off on an amazing journey on board Steigenberger Omar El Khayam Lake Nasser Cruise, Enjoy  the scenic beauty of Lake Nasser, visit Kalabsha Temple, Beit El Wali, Wadi El Seboua, Kasr Ibrim, Amada, and Abu Simbel Temple, Explore the beauty of ancient Temples, Look forward to idealistic services and excellent facilities on board Steigenberger Omar El Khayam Lake Nasser Cruise.

Explore The Temple of Beit El Wali is one of the remarkable yet less visited temples of ‎ancient Egypt. It is located about 55 kilometers south of Aswan in ‎the lands of Nubia.

The temple was dedicated to the worship of the god Amun and the god Khnum. It was relocated after the construction of the ‎Aswan High Dam in the 1960s. The fascinating Temple of Abu Simbel and the ‎Temple of Philae were also relocated along with the Temple of Beit El Wali to another place which is higher than its original location to avoid damage from the water of the Nile. This mission was accomplished by Polish ‎architects with funding from a Swiss anstitution and another in institute in Chicago.

Enjoy a tour in Kalabsha Temple which is an impressive Ptolemaic and Roman structure, not unlike nearby Philae in its layout. The early 19th-century Swiss traveller Burckhardt (who rediscovered Abu Simbel) thought it was 'amongst the most precious remains of Egyptian antiquity'. The temple, started in the late Ptolemaic period and completed during the reign of Emperor Augustus (30 BC–AD 14), was dedicated to the Nubian solar god Merwel, known to the Greeks as Mandulis. Later it was used as a church.

Enjoy discovering the amazing two Temples of Abu Simbel, as those temples have a unique style that reflects the amazing achievements of the new Kingdom, but unfortunately these special Temples were suffering from the Nile flooding, consequently the Egyptian government and UNESCO decided to co-operate in order to save these temples from sinking. The first temple is The Temple of Ramsses II, which was dedicated to the four universal gods Ptah, Re-Her-Akhtey, Amun-Re, and to Ramsses II himself. The great Abu Simbel Temple is also called The Sun Temple of Ramssess II. The other temple is The Temple of Queen Nefertari, who was Ramesses’s most beloved wife, and that temple is also called Temple of Hathor, who was the wife of the Sun God. The temple has a famous festival called the sun festival; Ramses built the temple at Abu Simbel, so that the inner chamber would light up at just two times of the year, which is on 22nd February, the anniversary of his ascension to the throne and on October 22 nd. Every year several thousand people gathering early in the morning to see this testament to the knowledge and skill that the ancient Egyptians possesses in order to align the temple so perfectly.
