The temple was dedicated to the worship of the god Amun and the god Khnum. It was relocated after the construction of the ‎Aswan High Dam in the 1960s. Later it was used as a church.

The temple has a famous festival called the sun festival; Ramses built the temple at Abu Simbel, so that the inner chamber would light up at just two times of the year, which is on 22nd February, the anniversary of his ascension to the throne and on October 22 nd. Every year several thousand people gathering early in the morning to see this testament to the knowledge and skill that the ancient Egyptians possesses in order to align the temple so perfectly.
