Know more about Abu Simbel which was rediscovered in 1813 by Swiss explorer John Lewis Burckhardt who was led to the site by a boy named Abu Simbel and the site was then named after him. The temples had long been forgotten and the sands of the desert covered it all except the tops of the heads of the huge statues in front of their entrances. Since 1909 when the sand was finally cleared away, these twin temples have become the most famous site in Egypt’s south. The Great Temple stands 98 feet (30 metres) high and 115 feet (35 metres) long with four seated colossi flanking the entrance, two to each side, depicting Ramesses II on his throne; each one 65 feet (20 metres) tall. Beneath these giant figures are smaller statues depicting Ramesses' conquered enemies, the Nubians, Libyans, and Hittites.
